Uses in Cattle:

Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD): excede for horses​  is approved for treating and controlling BRD associated with common pathogens like Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, and Histophilus somni. It is used both for treating active infections and as a preventative measure in high-risk cattle.
Foot Rot: It is effective against foot rot (infectious pododermatitis), a painful bacterial infection causing lameness.
Metritis: Excede is also labeled for use in treating acute metritis in postpartum dairy cows.
Uses in Swine:

Swine Respiratory Disease (SRD): Effective for treating respiratory infections caused by pathogens such as Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Pasteurella multocida, and Streptococcus suis.
Off-Label Use in Horses:

Dosage and Administration:
Excede is typically administered by subcutaneous injection in the posterior ear in cattle or intramuscularly in swine. The dosing frequency for Excede is generally every 72 hours, which provides extended protection and treatment due to its slow-release formulation.

Cattle Dosage:

BRD, Foot Rot: 1.5 mg of ceftiofur per pound (3 mg/kg) of body weight. Often, only one or two injections are required, depending on the severity.
Acute Metritis: Two doses given 72 hours apart.
Swine Dosage:

Administered intramuscularly at 2.27 mg/lb (5.0 mg/kg) of body weight, with a single injection sufficing in most cases.
Mechanism of Action:
Ceftiofur is bactericidal, meaning it kills bacteria by inhibiting the synthesis of their cell walls. This makes it particularly effective against a wide spectrum of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

Withdrawal Times:
Excede has established withdrawal times, which are essential to ensure no antibiotic residues remain in meat or milk:

Cattle: Excede has a withdrawal period of 13 days for slaughter after the last dose. Milk withdrawal is zero hours for dairy cows.
Swine: The withdrawal period is 14 days after injection.
Side Effects:
Common side effects in cattle and swine may include mild swelling at the injection site. Allergic reactions are rare but possible. As with any antibiotic, improper use can lead to resistance, so It should only be used under veterinary prescription.

Store Excede at room temperature, and do not freeze.
